Openet surpasses over one trillion telecoms events a day using Microsoft’s cloud

DUBLIN, 20th September 2018

  • Cloud is integral to ensure real-time data growth for 5G and IoT
  • Openet ready to meet increased telecoms network demand for security, privacy, AI integration, and automation as smart connected devices will exceed 50 billion globally in five years

Openet today announced that its Openet Data Fabric (ODF) has processed over a trillion events per day on the Microsoft Azure cloud demonstrating increased efficiency, security, and readiness for real-time data growth for telecoms networks. An event includes anything from calls, texts to data and social use on smartphones, to any interaction between connected devices.

Openet’s significant threshold for “cloud based” event processing demonstrates that the cloud is fit for telecom network grade volumes of activity. Although deployed in containerised architecture in order to assess as near as possible the likely architecture for operator systems moving to cloud environments in the short term, the processing speeds were 11.5m events per second with a 20 node cluster in order to scale elegantly above the 1 Trillion Events per Day (TED) goal of the trial. Openet also expects that trials with ODF in cloud native architecture would in fact be even more efficient. This tremendous technology milestone is made possible by the Openet Data Fabric’s modular design which is built with a micro-services approach, leveraging Openet's extensive telco grade data processing pedigree and Open Source technologies to ensure open data innovation.

Comparing to related performance tests from over a year ago on a private virtualised cloud environment, Openet demonstrated processing this trillion event per day goal, but also we were able to so with almost a third less hardware by tuning and running the solution on the Microsoft Azure cloud. The demonstration was focused on proving that Openet are ready for the real-time data growth that communications networks will require to efficiently manage 5G and IoT so that they meet the increased demand for security, privacy, assurance, AI integration, and automation. It also demonstrates that the cloud compute and store environment has matured to a point where telco-grade network traffic and applications can efficiently and safely rely on this environment.

“This is a monumental achievement by both teams. To put this achievement into perspective, Google processes approx. 3.5billion searches per day, which extrapolates to 1.2 trillion searches per year. As the number of connected devices continuously rises, the capability of the Openet Data Fabric and Microsoft Azure is key to secure a “cloud first” strategy for our customers. One Trillion events per day is just the start for us, the next step is more extended trialling of the cloud-native optimisation features we have developed for our full suite of data solutions on Microsoft Azure.” said Openet Global VP Technology and Support, Michael O’Sullivan.

“Within 5 years, it is forecasted that the number of smart connected devices in the world will be more than 50 billion – all of which will create data that can be shared, collected and analysed - it is critical that networks can handle and process the exponentially growing levels of transactions necessary for today and the future. We are therefore delighted with the results of this test and the potential impact that Openet’s innovation will deliver to the telecoms industry as a whole. It demonstrates the capability and scalability of the Microsoft Azure cloud required to support the challenges faced by telecoms operators. We look forward to working with Openet on this and other joint value propositions we can bring to market,” said Ger Perdisatt, Microsoft Ireland Enterprise Director.
