Openet Provides IMS Charging Expertise to CableLabs Packetcable 2.0 Specifications

November 7, 2006 - Openet

Dublin, Ireland and Reston, VA, November 7th, 2006; Openet Telecom, the market leader in offline and online charging and rating solutions for communications providers, today announced its leadership role in developing cable industry network usage collection and billing standards. As a participant on the CableLabs PacketCable 2.0 standards initiative, Openet actively contributed in developing the recently released Accounting Specification which defines how the collection of network usage data is done for any IP multimedia session on a cable network to ensure that required billing functions can be supported.

“Openet continues to lead the industry in defining charging and accounting solutions for all segments of the communications industry,” said Joe Hogan, CTO of Openet. “Our work with CableLabs reflects our proven expertise with IMS, in support of organizations such as 3GPP and IETF, and with the world’s largest and most progressive converged communication service providers worldwide who use Openet’s solutions for offline and online charging.”

The specification, which leverages key components of 3GPP’s IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) specification, builds upon Cable’s successful multi-service revenue growth strategy with the addition of flexible IMS compliant charging functions. PacketCable 2.0 enables a full range of emerging services based on SIP and Diameter in connection with existing Cable services, thereby extending Cable’s innovation through support of interactive communications, multiple simultaneous sessions, and personalized content delivery.

“The new PacketCable 2.0 Accounting specification will ensure operators can easily capture revenue for existing cable services, as well as emerging IP multi-media and SIP-based applications,” said Marc Price, Openet’s senior telecoms strategist and participant in the PacketCable 2.0 standards body. “It is exciting to help the cable industry achieve true revenue convergence within the network and improve the user experience.”

Some examples of new revenue streams facilitated by this kind of charging innovation include real-time interactive TV services, cable mobility, location based charging, and innovative advertising sponsored services.

Openet Telecom’s convergent charging solutions enable accounting for existing cable services, delivered using circuit switched and PacketCable 1.x service platforms, in combination with full support for emerging protocols used with Cable’s next generation of connected communication services. The FusionWorks IMS solution integrates Openet’s offline charging product with any IMS compliant service delivery platforms used to support residential and commercial VoIP services. Enterprise and residential charging rules for all IP based multi-media services can now be configured in one convenient logical location on the network.

Openet’s Cable solutions enable operators to measure and charge subscribers based on discrete experiences delivered across all screens, from infotainment content and communication services designed for the residential living room to innovative mobile services that extend cable’s reach outside of the home. Combining the full range of revenue generation capabilities within a scalable transaction processing platform, Openet’s Cable solutions support subscription based, on demand, and advertising sponsored content and services, residential and commercial VoIP, interactive TV applications, targeted advertising, and fixed mobile convergence.
