Leading North American Cable Operators Select Openet’s Transactional Intelligence Products

April 1, 2009 - Openet

WASHINGTON, D.C., The Cable Show – April 1, 2009 – Openet, the leading provider of Transactional Intelligence for the world’s largest and most innovative cable, wireless and wireline operators, today announced engagements with five leading North American cable operators.  Openet’s solutions enable the operators to gain visibility into subscriber use of video, voice and data services, enabling unprecedented network control and monetization.  Specifically, Openet’s FusionWorks™ Convergent Mediation product provides unparalleled visibility into cable provider networks.

In order to meet competitive pressures and customer expectations head on, operators are looking towards launching services that are interactive, intelligent, personalized and dynamic.  The three steps toward increasing revenue from cable services are network visibility, control and monetization—and without visibility, cable providers can’t move forward.  According to the National Cable & Telecommunications Association, cable companies have invested more than $147 billion dollars in new infrastructure to support new services.  Now they need to see the return on their investment.

“Now more than ever, innovation is paramount to the cable industry,” said Michael Manzo, chief marketing officer at Openet.  “There is an ongoing evolution toward a more dynamic infrastructure, offering increasingly personalized services and content and developing sophisticated business models.  Recognizing the value of subscriber and network data to gain complete user and service visibility is the logical – but pioneering – first step.”

Video
Video comes with a host of challenges, from collecting and correlating video usage to measuring and monetizing clickthroughs.  The first step toward understanding TV viewing and usage is visibility; without a solid solution in place to aggregate user data and feed it into the IT or partner systems, cable operators lose valuable insight into, and control over, network events and as a result, are unable to meet subscriber demand for a personalized and interactive viewing experience.  Cable operators are turning to Openet’s solutions to provide a more interactive viewing experience by collecting tuning and clickstream information from a variety of video sources, including Video On Demand (VOD), Switched Digital Video (SDV) and Enhanced TV Binary Interchange Format (EBIF) applications with a unified platform.  By gaining comprehensive visibility into viewing data of subscribers, cable operators can personalize, and ultimately improve, the user experience.

Data

Based on subscriber demands, network optimization requirements and competitive challenges, cable operators are under increasing pressure to differentiate their data services. Operators also need to minimize bandwidth abuse and efficiently allocate network resources while creating new revenue opportunities with increasingly sophisticated and personalized service options.
A key challenge facing cable operators in meeting these objectives is the lack of comprehensive visibility into how subscribers use their data services. Visibility of data usage leads the way for new offerings such as dynamic service tiers, to simultaneously deliver control and monetization capabilities.

Voice
Voice services will soon begin to evolve from today’s flat-rate plans to more flexible pricing bundles, requiring them to be more personalized and dynamic based on subscriber usage patterns. Future opportunities for voice include the ability to offer quad-play packages that include wireless, first by partnering with a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), which requires the ability to collect, track and measure usage on the MVNO network—meaning that not only is visibility a key to success, but so is convergence.

“Given today’s market needs, it was critical that Openet provide a suite of intelligent solutions that provide actionable visibility into cable networks—especially as providers are looking to move from siloed services to a single, converged platform,” said Marc Price, vice president of technology and chief technology officer, Americas for Openet. “Only Openet’s Transactional Intelligence solutions are able to deliver on the convergence, scalability and data collection and correlation requirements unique to this industry. Our work with these leading cable providers will enable them to maintain a competitive edge and continue to increase customer personalization, raising ARPU along with customer satisfaction.”

Openet provides Transactional Intelligence solutions that allow cable operators to extract maximum value from their networks. With Openet’s FusionWorks Framework, operators can gain visibility into network usage, dynamically control network resources and monetize network activities. Openet enables cable initiatives across video, data and voice services, such as DOCSIS 3.0 migrations, Addressable Advertising initiatives and subscriber rights management in linear, on-demand and SDV environments.
