December 3, 2018 - Aleks

Hong Kong, November 29, 2018 --The winners of Telecom Asia’s 11th Readers’ Choice & Innovation Awards have been announced, with a total of 24 awards being presented to 12 firms during a gala awards ceremony at the Mira Hotel in Hong Kong on November 28.

Ciena, Cisco Systems, Huawei and Nokia were the big winners, taking home three awards each.

Ciena won the Analytics Innovation of the Year category for the second consecutive year for its Blue Planet/Packet Design solution, while its 6500 Reconfigurable Line System won the Optical Network Innovation of the Year and its 5170 Service Aggregation Switch nabbed the Fixed Broadband Innovation of the Year category.

Cisco Systems won the Cloud Innovation of the Year for its Managed Services Accelerator. It also took home the Data Center Innovation of the Year with the Cisco Network Assurance Engine and NFV Innovation of the Year for the Cisco Network Services Orchestrator.

Huawei also scooped three awards: LTE Innovation of the Year for the Huawei CloudAIR2.0 Solution, Smart City Innovation of the Year for the Huawei Smart City Intelligent Operations Centre (IOC), and VoLTE Innovation of the Year for its VoLTE based Voice over 5G (Vo5G) solution.

This year also saw the return of key players like Ericsson, which won three trophies –  5G Innovation of the Year (5G Platform),  Network Optimization Innovation of the Year (Ericsson SON Optimization Manager), and Small cell Innovation of the Year (Radio Dot System).

Nokia grabbed the CEM Innovation of the Year award (for the Nokia Autonomous Customer Care solution), Emerging Technology of the Year (for the EdenNet platform), and Wireless Home Technology of the Year (Nokia WiFi solution).

Meanwhile, VMWare and ZTE also had a good time, with each winning two awards, while Fortinet, AWS Elemental, Openet, and Tata Communications all went home with one award each.

“The 11th annual Telecom Asia Readers’ Choice & Innovation Awards presented some interesting challenges to the editors of Telecom Asia, and this is reflected in our theme at the awards this year – Setting new benchmarks in telecom innovation,” said Allan Tan, editor-in-chief of Telecom Asia. “The result is an interesting, and at times perplexing, mix of investments and projects that Telecom Asia observed throughout the year.”

This year’s awards also features four new categories – Best Cloud Application of the Year, Cloud Infrastructure of the Year, Emerging Technology of the Year and Wireless Home Technology of the Year – reflecting the diversified yet significant role of cloud technologies and the emergence of new technologies that are continuously reshaping the telecoms industry.

The editors of Telecom Asia narrowed down the nominations from readers for 24 categories to a shortlist of 110 entries, representing 46 companies. Voting was open to our online subscriber base of service providers in Asia in early September.
