Niall Norton on the rapidly-evolving telecom's market

The commercial models for Telecom Operators are evolving at the speed of light. Having to plan and implement these new models that include such things are revenue share with third parties for content and product sales, advertising revenues for delivery of new and innovative services, and new services arising from rapidly changing technology presents a real dilemma for Operators. The aim of the game is to not only deal with this approaching wave of changes but also to preserve existing network quality and integrate on an increasing basis fixed and mobile services in seamless packages. And finally, Operators are now very serious having to deal with rapid, low cost rollout of services tailored specifically to sophisticated customer segments.

For service providers, this means new ways of doing business, including new services targeted at discreet market segments, new pricing models, and cross-service promotions. But perhaps the most dramatic evolution is the least seen – that which continues behind the scenes. As more offerings and third-party content are made available, the impact is greatest on the service providers' network architecture, and the impact of policy decisions for real-time service delivery of network resource usage.
