The Professional Services division is responsible for delivering client mediation solutions - built on Openet’s mediation product set - to customers. This will involve analysis of the customers’ business requirements and implementing a solution to meet these needs in Openet’s rules based platform. The solution will typically be implemented in a combination of DSD, a tcl type scripting language, Shell scripts and in C/C++.
The Core Technology group is a central team that’s performs many types of consultancy functions within Professional Services in Openet. One such function is to provide expertise in building and presenting product demonstrations and proof of concepts (POCs) to customers as part of the pre-Sales effort.
ROLE SUMMARY
The role of Senior Software Engineer in the Core Technology group sees the candidate working on many initiatives in a very fast moving environment, often concurrently. The primary role is one of membership of the POC/Demo team to deliver results of various development initiatives in addition to performing presentation of demonstrations in conjunction with the Openet Sales team to customers at their premises.
Some of the tasks involved are:
- Working with the Lead Engineer and other team members to interface with Customers, Sales and partner companies on requirements definition for demos and proof of concept exercises.
- Working with the Product Group regarding product features, functionality, new releases and the long-term product roadmap.
- Preparing and planning small development projects, and driving those plans through to a successful conclusion.
- Working as a team member under the Lead Engineer for larger development tasks.
- Carrying out research, development and implementation activities using Openet’s full product range (FW Mediation, FW ActiveCharge and FW ActiveRate).
- Training and knowledge transfer to pre-sales engineers on the standard demo suite.
- Presenting Openet product demonstrations at customer meetings as well as trade shows and conferences.
- Participating in proof of concept exercises on site at customer premises.
- Interoperability testing exercise of 3rd party vendor equipment with Openet products.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Takes responsibility for delivery of standard and straightforward demonstrations and POCs (with backup of POC team). This involves taking requirements from the Sales team as well as customers and equipment vendors; and delivering the resultant demos/pocs on time and to budget.
- Produces requirements, functional and design specifications in the course of implementing solutions.
- Demonstrates an organised, systematic, disciplined and analytical approach to requirements definition, design, and implementation. Ensure that this approach is applied in a coherent fashion to all aspects of the development life cycle.
- Actively develops own knowledge in telecommunications industry trends, the evolution of new services and in leading edge telecommunications technology with backup and support from CT team and Manager.
- Adopts an innovative and committed approach to overcoming obstacles and solving problems in order to successfully deliver on commitments.
- Strong development role is called for in this position with an equal emphasis on research into industry related technology and trends.
- Can operate effectively under high-pressure situations, particularly during onsite demos and POCs.
- Have excellent oral and written communication skills for effective dialogue with customer representatives and with colleagues in Services and other Openet Departments.
- Able to represent Openet Telecom at customer meetings, presentations and conferences.
- Travel for short periods (on average one to two weeks at a time) to customer site. Overall up to 20% is expected.
EDUCATION
Bachelors’ degree or equivalent experience, and a min 4 years industry experience.

- Strong technical skills and understanding gained through previous development experience.
- Deep understanding of billing and mediation and the telecoms industry. Ability to expand where there are gaps – i.e. prepaid service content charging.
