ROLE SUMMARY
- The role of a Maintenance Software Design Engineer in Openet Telecom requires working on a broad range of software development tasks in a peer-reviewed environment. The Maintenance Software Design Engineer must be able to take and complete, specific, well defined tasks of large scope. Some of the tasks involved are:
- Ability to take a Change Request Specification and take it to completion.
- Ability to take on responsibility for complete major Maintenance Releases and deliver them to schedule.
- Ability to take and understand large customer deployments.
- Ability to Unit Test and System Testing all deliverables.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with other members of the team, as well as services and customers.
- Mentoring of new recruits as required.
- Be available for 24/7 support on a rota basis.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Is able to plan, schedule and monitor own work competently.
- Operates within a peer-reviewed environment with occasional supervisor review of tasks being carried out. Normally receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instruction on new assignments. Is proactive in ensuring resolution of items requiring clarification. Ensures assumptions are explicit and clearly documented rather than implicit.

- Continues to demonstrate an organised, systematic, disciplined and analytical approach to designing, problem solving, coding and defect fixing.
- Has sufficient oral and written communication skills for effective dialogue with colleagues on a project team and superiors.
- Actively develops an appreciation of the wider field of technology outside his/her own specialisation and has developed a good broad understanding of computer system architecture, (studying, magazines, WEB..)

ENTRY LEVEL REQUIREMENTS
KNOWLEDGE - ESSENTIAL
- Software development in a UNIX environment Design and development track record in C/C++
- Ability to trouble shoot effectively problems on a remote sites on Solaris/HP (including understanding all elements of CORE file analysis)
USEFUL
- Networking, Multi-threaded programming, JAVA, Oracle, CORBA.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelors degree or equivalent experience, and a minimum 2-year to 4-years industry experience
